Dear Washington State ARNP,
ARNPs United of Washington State (AUWS) is a state-wide professional organization which advocates for all Washington nurse practitioners and their clients. We communicate and lobby with the state legislature regarding practice and access to care issues, publish a monthly newsletter with articles and listings of interest to nurse practitioners, and offer other useful information and services for ARNPs through our website, www.auws.org.
Over the last few years we have accomplished the following:
- Full prescriptive authority for ARNPs
- Authority to sign death certificates
- Authority to sign handicapped parking permits
- Recognition of ARNP prescription in schools
- Labor and Industries “Attending Provider” status
- Participation at rules writing workshops for House Bill 2876 Ð management of chronic noncancer pain
- Continued support of nurse legislators in their work to improve access to care for all
- Participation in the passage of legislative bills allowing respiratory therapists to take orders from ARNPs
- Moved a bill through the House of Representatives to allow pharmacists to accepts prescriptions for controlled substances from out-of-state NPs
- Represented ARNPs at:
- Nurse Legislative Day in Olympia
- ARNP Subcommittee meetings for the Washington Nursing Commission
- "Medical Home" planning meetings
- Regional and national NP meetings
- Future of Nursing Summit
- Media training for Nurse Practitioners
- Awarded a $2500 scholarship with collaboration with the NP Healthcare Foundation
- Continued publication of our monthly newsletter, ARNP Care
AUWS is redefining who we are.
Why? Because everything AUWS does serves all the advanced practice nurses in the state. AUWS is the best investment you can make for your present and future professional practice.
How? Every advanced practice nurse in the state of Washington is now a member.
What does that mean? You can vote for our board of directors, you can receive our newsletter ARNP Care electronically, and you can participate on our committees.
Why you need us:
- AUWS pays for the lobbyist who represents us in Olympia. Our scope of practice is governed by the rules and regulations of Washington state, affecting every aspect of our daily practice and every patient we see. Representation insures our interests are monitored and maintained, that our position and practice is included in relevant legislation.
- ARNP Care, our newsletter, and the AUWS website provide monthly updates on important information regarding our profession and practice related concerns. These resources are a forum to keep us connected to one another.
- AUWS provides representation and advocacy at conferences and public meetings on issues relevant to our profession.
- AUWS provides media training and communication networks to increase public awareness of our role as primary care givers.
- AUWS keeps you informed of state and national developments relevant to our practice.
- AUWS collects data and supports research to best document the services we provide, how much we cost to provide it and the outcomes of our work.
Why we need you:
- AUWS needs financial contributions from our membership to fund these activities.
- AUWS needs your participation to continue the work we are doing to support one another and our practices.

Need a few more reasons to join? No single ARNP can accomplish as much as a state organization in advocating for our profession. In order to succeed in making a difference in health care in the United States, we need to be united as ARNPs at the state level1. We have accomplished a lot, but we still have a full agenda of ways we would like to further the nurse practitioner profession in Washington State. Maintaining our scope of practice is an important, on-going challenge that will continue to require collaborative energy, commitment, and financing through AUWS membership.
Therefore, we invite all nurse practitioners to join AUWS in support of our efforts to improve our collective practice environment. Please do so by making a contribution online or printing a copy of our brochure in PDF format to send in. We invite your ideas, energy, and yes, contributions toward our ongoing work. Our funds are largely directed toward lobbying in Olympia. The bulk of our work is donated by volunteers, including legislative committee members and the Board of Directors.
It is easier than ever to be a part of AUWS.
We truly appreciate your participation in AUWS. Please contact us by email with any questions or concerns relating to professional issues and/or your ideas for our ongoing work.
Sincerely,
The AUWS Board of Directors
